Managing Diabetes: A Practical Guide for Malaysians
Malaysia faces a serious diabetes epidemic. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey, more than 3.9 million Malaysians are living with diabetes — and many are undiagnosed. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the good news is that it is very manageable with the right approach.
Diet: The Foundation of Diabetes Management
Controlling your carbohydrate intake is key. This does not mean eliminating rice or bread entirely, but being mindful of portion sizes and choosing lower-GI alternatives like brown rice, oats, and whole-grain bread. Avoid sugary drinks, including fruit juices and teh tarik with condensed milk.
Exercise: Consistent and Achievable
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. A brisk walk around the neighbourhood is sufficient. Exercise improves insulin sensitivity and helps maintain a healthy weight.
Medication and Monitoring
For many patients, lifestyle changes alone are not enough — and that is perfectly okay. Our doctors at TNF Clinic will work with you to find the right medication, explain how to use a glucometer at home, and set realistic HbA1c targets.
Regular Check-Ups
Diabetic patients should visit their doctor at least every three months. We check your blood sugar, review your medication, and monitor for complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, and feet.
